Thomas Adrian Mittler, Horn
Thomas Adrian Mittler, born in March 2000 in Frankfurt am Main, is Ensemble Modern’s horn player since October 2024. Before he was a member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. He is a finalist and scholarship recipientof the 2024 German Music Competition, where he also received a special prize from the Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben.
Thomas Mittler began his musical career at the Mannheim Music School, studying with Lucas Weinspach and Tobias Mahl. While still at school, he became a member of the Baden-Württemberg and Berlin state youth orchestras and the German National Youth Orchestra. From 2016, he was a junior student at the Karlsruhe University of Music with Will Sanders before being joining Christian-Friedrich Dallmann's horn class at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2017. He has been a member of the German Academic Merit Foundation since 2021.
He was successful at various national and international competitions, including 4th prize at the 2022 Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition. He began his orchestral career as an academy member at the Komische Oper Berlin in February 2022, before being accepted into the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic in September 2022. Following his time at the academy, he will join Ensemble Modern in the fall.
Thomas Mittler can be heard as a chamber musician in the LIMES Wind Quintet and will also play in various chamber music formations as part of the concert sponsorship of the German Music Competition during the 2025/26 season.
In addition to his performing activities, he is also active as a teacher, both regularly in the horn class at the Berlin University of the Arts and as a preparatory teacher for entrance examinations to music academies. He also attaches particular importance to teaching music to non-professionals of all ages and has supported various Berlin school and amateur orchestras as a coach.
